I learned a lot from this challenge! I learned I could shoot candlelight when it wasn't pitch dark outside and still get a nice 'flame' shot. I also learned to be careful with hot wax...in that I only burned myself once with dripping it onto my fingers.
It was hard for me to capture all flames at the same level of 'burn'....this is the best I could accomplish.
I wanted to have the nearest flame in focus and the distant ones blurred. I cannot, however, explain the terrible grainy-ness on some of my pix. I shoot with high resolution and still can't seem to overcome this. Suggestions are welcome.
Once again, the grainy-ness is killing me in this shot. I was pleased that I could capture the flames without too much white blowout.
These next 2 are mostly for fun.....I realize the candle flame is terribly blown out, but I accomplished the highlights on the frogs which is what I was going for.
I included this one because I captured a flame 'starburst' and I don't even know how I did that :-)
great job! you have a great sense of how to set up props with attention to detail, my favorite was the last one, I loved the star burst!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had fun with your creativity on this challenge! #2 is my favorite - everything is perfect! Then I like #4 and #6. #4 has a little bit of silliness that is done well, and the starburst in #6 is so nice. You put a lot of thought into your pics and it shows!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the grain, how high was your ISO, are you cropping to much? or are you over sharpening? Just some ways I could think of for the discoloration/grain.
i really liked #2, i loved the starburst too on the last one, it is like sometimes when you photograph the sun it does that, they do sell a filter for that too,
ReplyDeletenice work
#2 and number 5 I thought were fantastic.... I loved the arrangement of the candles and the reflection in #2 and loved the starburst in #5.....great pics Sis
ReplyDeleteHey Lynn,
ReplyDeleteI like the reflections in #2
I also like the lighting on the frogs and the hand. I'd like to see the hand by itself but it's great in the setup you did with the sparkling candle.
Look at the exif info on that cake and candle pic that's grainy. If you are in auto mode it's usually due to a high iso. I think the camera pushed the iso up to 800 or even 1600 iso to get enough light. But then again all your other ones are good.
Hey thanks for this insight. I believe you've helped uncover my "problem"....I was shooting in Manual Mode...and I had selected my ISO at 1600. Thanks for helping me understand!!
DeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteThe starburst is probably due in part that only a tiny bit of the actual flame is peeking over and you are using a small aperture.
