#22 Reflections and Refractions

Afternoon sun reflections coming in south-facing window. F8, SS 1/20, ISO 800
Refraction of straw in water glass.  F9, SS 1/20, ISO 1200
Trees reflecting in pond.  F11, SS 1/250, ISO 200
Looking for your input re: using a backdrop vs no backdrop.  F5, SS 1/20, ISO 400
Re above:
It was particularly difficult for me to get the image in focus in the mirror. As you can see, I still did not accomplish it. Any advice is welcomed.....
Simple reflections.

  1. I liked the first one great idea, and I liked the black and white makeup with reflection in mirror, crisp and simple but bold. nice work.

  2. Firs toff, my favorite was #3, no wait, it was #6, oh no, make it number 5, but then again, the simplicity of number one was pretty good too....Oh heck sis, they were all good....in answer to your questions, regarding focus, did you try to manually focus on the reflection in the mirror? For me I preferred the picture with the backdrop...I love the way everyone is using black and white......

    1. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it. I THOUGHT I had been trying to do exactly as you suggest, but I just could not get it right :-( I'm gonna keep trying though :-)
I preferred the mirror pic with the backdrop too....but everyone's eye sees things differently. That's why I love photography I guess.

  3. Very lovey! My favorite is #3 such a serene view with a relaxed reflection, then #4 I like the white background and the simplicity - perfect, and I like the set up of #5. And #1, overall nice composition, great pics!

  4. Lynn, beautiful shots of both reflection and refraction. I like the simple illustration of refraction in #2 and the black and white reflection because of the angle of the mirror. It highlights the still life of makeup and the reflection being barely out of focus is not distracting to me. I think you have a great eye for framing!

  5. Hi Lynn,
I like the makeup with the dark background. Having the cam down low to the counter was good. I don't know which one has the backdrop you added. I'm pretty sure if you would have used f8 or f11 the depth of field would have taken care of it. The subject is further away than the surface of the mirror. At f/5 with a 50mm lens the depth of field is about 4.5". You can see the base of the mirror stand is in focus. f/11 would give you 9.6"and all that would be in focus. Depth of field calculator---- http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html-----Check your email for a little diagram of mirror focusing. I didn't know this!! We learned something tonight.

  6. The glass and straw are simple and pleasing. You can see where the light is coming from the upper right by the light line on the straw, the edge of the glass and the light on the table just to the left of the glass after coming through the water. And I can see a shadow of the glass on the table. One more thing, the straw is reflecting lightly on top of the water. You win with the most reflections and refractions in one picture. If I could only see the camera reflection-----------
